Her hair is a blonde rat's nest sitting on top of her head; it is not tameable, but at least it is short. Her uniform is in constant dissaray. She is absolutely the type to pull her skirt up and her blouse buttons open to a worrying degree, until an authority figure makes her fix it. She also has yet to learn the meaning of the word "hanger" and constantly looks like she just rolled out of bed. (She may very well have just rolled out of bed.) Outside of school, she tends to look like a rave puked her out. She favors neon, short skirts, and the tiniest denim shorts in the world. Also: cat hoodies with galaxy print, flip-flops, plastic jewelry, etc etc. If it's loud and very bright, Addy loves it.

PERSONALITY:
To be blunt, Addy is a problem child. She grew up as the privileged daughter of two very normal people. But she was the epitome of every middle-child stereotype in the whole world. Her older sister probably could cure cancer in her sleep. Her younger sister is the most generous person you could ever hope to meet, and brave as hell besides. And then there's Addy, who has crashed almost every bike, scooter, and almost car by going really really fast down hills. YOLO is a very real thing, and embarrassingly enough, her life philosophy, and she believes in sucking up every moment and very genuinely not planning ahead. She's a risk taker in every sense of that word, and will jump off that thing, shotgun that beer, kiss that boy, swallow that pill if it's even a little in front of her.
Which doesn't speak to as many insecurities as you'd think. Not in that regard, anyway. She's a legitimately very happy person. She's just as strongly non-apologetic about her choice to jump into things blind as some people are about being hyper-competitive. She gets to minimize as many consequences to her decisions as she can, that way. Which, of course there are consequences. She gets detention practically weekly, and she has flirted the academic suspension line at least a couple of times. She has a total of three traffic tickets and one disorderly conduct fine already. The people who see Addy as a trainwreck waiting to happen probably won't have to wait long. Her parents are just mostly happy she's made it halfway through high school without being pregnant or failing out legitimately. They try not to remember there's still half of high school left.
Addy does have insecurities; of course she does. They mostly come in the areas of feeling like she's good at literally nothing and that no one will want to spend any time with her, because she doesn't have a lot to offer except for a good time. And for the most part, Addy accepts that about herself. Someone has to be the person who's only there for fun, right? It's not like she tries to be good at school, or successful in the future, so it's okay when she isn't. She drives that point home by being very warm but incredibly flaky. She's the kind of friend who you won't hear from in months, only to get a text at 3am begging you to come get donuts, unannounced. She has loads of friends, but they're mostly "friends." She doesn't DO commitments unless she's in it all the way, but she does genuinely like people. She has the incredible tendency to self-sabotage. She drifts away from people when she senses she's made them mad, and gets pretty terrified that she'll ruin relationships she needs. She knows what she is, and what it looks like, and though she doesn't want to change, she knows that the people she cares about deserve more than her. They deserve everything. Of course, this is kind of skewed, and has resulted in the loss of friendships she could've actually kept. But that's Addy.
Around a few people, most notably her housemates, her little sister, her (new as of last year!) boyfriend, and a few good friends, she has a mama bear streak about a mile long. When she loves you, she'll sacrifice the shirt off her back and will also work a street corner conning people into giving you their shirts. She'd absolutely be a Hufflepuff on the other side of the ocean. She's flitty, but she has a definite backbone, and getting on the wrong side of that is very unfortunate. Addy can be incicive and fairly cruel around people she legitimately dislikes. That doesn't happen very often. When it does, she reflects her well-bred mother's ability to throw shade in cruel-while-polite, cutting way that only a Southern woman can. (She pretends that she is not like her mother at all, so again this circumstance is avoided as much as possible. But mess with her family or friends, and you'll see. :))
Addy has more good sense than first meets the eye, too. She can't not; she does enough risky stuff that she has to mitigate possible consequences. (Cue a weird ability to brew contraceptives and flirt with cops. Skills are skills, ok?) When you get her to calm down, it's pretty apparent there's a good head under all that blonde fluff. She is creative; that mostly comes out in potion making and probably only has a little to do with the fact that potions can get you high and create fun explosions. She can even be witty, but she mostly hides that with the defense mechanism of making people think she's blonde and dumb. It's their fault if they fall for it. The more upset she gets, the more smiley faces and capital letters she uses, as though that'll throw off the scent and turn conversation to something better than her emotions, which she does not like to dwell on even a little bit. She isn't in life for the attention, not at all. She doesn't like attention that much, honestly. She's quick to deflect conversations on to the other person and how they're doing, because that's more interesting.
Addy doesn't plan for the future, and pretends she doesn't care about it, but that's only because it kind of terrifies her. So far her job prospects largely include potions and maybe working at Wizard Starbucks. And thank Merlin for potions, because without that she'd be totally hopeless. It just happens to be more fun to do a lot of fun stuff and not care about it than actively working to change it and then sitting around weeping when it doesn't work. Addy does not weep.
HISTORY
FAMILY MEMBERS:
Father: Edward Foster-Hayes, Muggle. Formerly just Foster. He took his wife's name when she didn't want to stop being Hayes, because adopting all that Muggle was one step too hard. He's a very calm, quiet man, well-loved in the community, a judge.
Mother: Catherine Foster-Hayes, Halfblood. The Hayes bloodline is magical and while not ancient, it's prestigious and rooted in old American money. They believe in diversifying and have never really tried for pureblood status, but the tradition is there. Cathy is a professional socialite and also a rather renowned scholar of magical and Muggle literature.
Sister: Lily Emma Foster-Hayes; 19; graduate of Gooseberry; currently in Washington, D.C. simultaneously pursuing a degree in law and a magical law career. She's weirdly ambitious, it's fun.
Sister: Jane Foster- Hayes; 14, freshman at Gooseberry, in Ribbonfin.
HISTORY:
Adeline Foster-Hayes was born the second daughter to a family deeply rooted in community and academic tradition and swiftly decided to have almost none of it. Her parents came from two similar traditions on opposite sides of the coin. The Fosters and the Hayes were both well known Virginia families. It was just that one was Muggle and the other magic. Edward and Catherine met on a lecture about Jane Austen of all things, and went on exactly ten dates before Catherine let slip that she could do magic. He decided that was interesting instead of strange, and they got married a few years later. As you could probably guess, neither family approved 100% of the union and were fairly relieved when they at least kept the last names hyphened so that each family legacy could live on. The wedding was an impossibly gorgeous affair, anyway.
They waited a few years to have children, and when they did, they were rewarded with three daughters within five years. Addy was the second. She was a relatively easy baby, except when they tried to put her in frilly dresses, until she could walk. And then Addy was just everywhere. She could never sit still, even as a small child. ADHD was suggested as soon as she was old enough to be supposed to be sitting down at some points. Her mother stood up for her and said a little energy was good in a girl. She probably lived to regret those words later, but stood by them anyway. She showed magic a little late; which both of her parents were deeply grateful for, because the couple years it went untamed was bad enough. Addy had a habit of creating flashes and exploding glasses when she was too excited. It was loud and kind of pretty, but ultimately sort of annoying. Which was a good parallel for what Addy was like in the long run.
Growing up, Adeline favored the muggle side of her family. She went to Muggle elementary school on the behest of their father, who thought the girls should have a mixed education. And anyway, Addy always had a tendency to favor the underdog. Her father's family thought she was sweet, and didn't glare in disapproval the way her mama's family did when she came to the house dressed in shorts to Thanksgiving. It wasn't their fault they didn't do magic. She didn't love the fact that she COULD do magic right away, honestly, and wasn't particularly looking forward to going to magic school, because that mostly meant she was picking the side she didn't want. She'd been raised by her mother to be proper, to be classy, but to be smart. But because that was boring, Addy chose to do the direct opposite of all those things at every opportunity. She was aggressively not classy. She made actively dumb choices. She ran away from home the night before she was due to go to Ilvermorny, but only got as far as two blocks away before her father intercepted, having fully prepared for this event. He explained how she could have both muggle and magic sides. She didn't quite believe him, but did believe the fact that her mother would've grounded her for a year if she didn't go, rendering Muggle Richmond not that much fun.
And so Addy followed her sister Lily to Ilvermorny because of tradition. She thought she'd hate that because as a rule, Addy hated tradition, and was fully expecting this to be a continuation of her mother's family, aka a bunch of stuck up people having weird magic tea parties. The good news was, it was not. She was sorted Thunderbird after a little while, and she took to the newfound freedom with mixed success. Addy went through mixed periods of neglecting class and paying attention. She made at least passing-friends with literally three quarters of the school; that took a lot of upkeep, all right? Classes hated her, for the most part, and she hated classes. She did like potions. The precision of it all made her exhale and calm down, and Addy had an intuition that made adding or substituting ingredients to make for stronger, better formulas easy. Her mother was thrilled that she'd finally found something she was good at. Her mother was less thrilled about all the detention notices she was getting about her 13 year old daughter being caught making out with upper classmen. Win some, lose some.
Her parents were also working to get her into Gooseberry since her first year at Ilvermorny. Lily Emma had been a breeze. Addy took several calls, a donation, and a strong letter of recommendation from her Ilvermorny Potions professor, but she did get there. Again, she really didn't want to leave Ilvermorny and thought that she would probably just stay in her best friend's trunk til next year. Sadly, no. She was convinced by the fact that Gooseberry didn't actually sound particularly fancy. Maybe even less steeped in hardboiled tradition than Ilvermorny. The fact that she was in a really, really awful young-teen boy scandal at the time had only a little to do with the relative compliance in her transfer. She doesn't like to talk about it, but it involved school-wide rumors about how easy she was, about how devoted the boy was to his teddy bear, and eventually a shouting match that was almost a fist-fight, and stink-eyes from her entire old house. It was time to move on.
And she liked her new school! A lot! Among her housemates, she found a million people to talk to and have adventures with. She enjoyed the campus and its outdoor quality. Never a very fussy girl where dirt and rocks were concerned, she thrived in a place she could clamber up rocks and hide in a potentially haunted forest. (And get into trouble for remaining in said forest. But you know, whatever.) The difference between here and every other place she'd ever been was the fact that she was expected to be a little elite. She didn't quite rise to the occasion; she still barely skirted by in a lot of places. But even her mother had to grudingly consent that it wasn't quite as bad as it could've been. Really, Addy just didn't want to be fired from school. She actually loved people there. They needed her.
In the summer, she always completely made up for being mildly well behaved at school. (Mildly is a loose term.) The year she came back from freshman year it was as an absolute terror. This was mostly because she was finally in contact with the non-magical part of her life, and it was always such a relief to return that she went a little overboard. She largely didn't stay at home, and ran off to friends' houses. (Sorry in advance, friends.) She almost crashed two cars (but DIDN'T!), and punched a guy at a concert (for hitting on a girl clearly not interested! Necessary!) Her parents decided to do the responsible thing and bar all the windows and floo, but she still seemed to find ways out.
Last summer was different. She snuck out, but that was about all. She didn't seem to be around enough to get in serious trouble. Addy didn't tell her parents this was because she was sneaking out to see a boy, and that the boy had been her best friend since freshman year. She hasn't told anyone much about dating A Boy From Home since the summer, because she doesn't want to jinx it,because it's good, and she knows that if she settles into something too completely and takes advantage, she'll ruin it. That's the same with school, honestly. She's afraid she's already got too used to both good things, and it's only a matter of time before they implode, because that's what she does. But hey. No use thinking about the future right? Exactly. They'll be ruined when they are ruined. For now, she'll enjoy it.
SCHOOL
YEAR: Junior!
HOUSE: Azurcrest/former Thunderbird
SORTING: "Addy, you and me, we're gonna be bffs, right?"
"Right, magic bird!" <---That was basically it. There wasn't really another place for her to be, and Addy loves her Azurcrests SO much. She always broke about nine too many rules to be a prefect, but she often acts as Unofficial Dorm Mom when people are sad, or in trouble.
WAND: Birch and unicorn hair (which is a traditional core, but she's so proud of it because UNICORNS <333), 10.6"
FAMILIAR: Would you trust her with an animal?
CLASSES: Charms, Herbology, Potions *_*, Physical Education, Magical Literature, Astronomy
SENIOR PROJECT: Something in Potions for sure? Other than that l o effing l who knows.
ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE: Other than being something of an idiot savant (both words relevant) in Potions, and adept when she focuses on magical Lit, Addy habitually barely gets good enough grades to pass on to the next year. She's just focused on other things and hell, C's get degrees. But she's totally failed classes. Hermeticism? Bye. Her goal is to graduate on time and avoid suspension. So far, so okay.
EXTRACURRICULARS: Outdoor Exploration, Equestrian just to pet the horses. Disclaimer: she's bad at clubs. As of February, 2014, Addy was also named Prefect, in a fun twist of how the fuck did that happen.
